A first aid kit is one of our ten essentials and an absolute necessity when out maintaining our trails. Although what to carry in a first aid kit is personal, and everyone has an opinion, there are a few items that should be considered. A suggestion too, keep your supplies in a small, compact waterproof bag in a distinguishable color, and in a location that can be quickly accessed- keep. Consider taking a first aid course and carrying a first aid guide.
Personal Protection
- At least two pair of non-latex gloves (I keep a pair in my kit and a pair in the pocket on my wait belt for fast access).
- Hand sanitizer
Tools
- Tweezers or a tick tool
- Multi-tool or knife
- Small blunt-tip scissors
Medications and Ointments
- Personal medication, especially epi-pens or rescue inhalers
- Antibiotic ointment packets
- Antiseptic wipe packets
- Hydrocortisone ointment packets
- Chewable aspirin (81 mg)
- Benadryl
- Ibuprofen and Acetaminophen
Bandages
- Blister treatment, such as moleskin
- Absorbent compress dressings (4×4) or a sanitary napkin to stop bleeding
- Adhesive band-aids (assorted sizes), including butterfly bandages
- Adhesive cloth tape (10 yards x 1 inch), leukotape is recommended because of its multiple uses for equipment repair
- Vet wrap- holds dressings in place regardless of outside temperature and moisture
- Roller or ace bandage
- Triangular bandage or 2 bandannas (think multiple use)
